16 BIT SESSIONS is an ongoing blog/covers series by VILLAINEST in which James recreates songs by bands that he admires in the VILLAINEST style - that is to say, in the spirit of old 16 bit SEGA Mega Drive music.
Many of the artists covered are from Toronto to pay tribute to some of our favourite bands from this city's wonderful and varied music scene. Others are simply artists we love and that have influenced us along the way. You can read about the motivations behind the creation of each track at villainest.com/tag/16bs
All covers were made between January 25th and March 14th 2015 as part of an exercise to get better at MIDI programming and have some fun.
These songs were created using combinations of Ableton Live, GenMDM by Little Scale, FM Drive by Aly James Labs and assorted free soundfonts and sample packs.
Bonus tracks include 16 bit versions of the SAILOR MOON theme and WOAH WOAH by Motor Goat - these are pretty much 16 Bit Sessions #0 and #0.5.
All composer credit goes to the original artists referenced in each track's title. Thank you for being unwitting subjects to my weird musical exploits! Please do not sue me!
If for whatever reason you don't want any of your tunes included in this album then just give me a shout. At no point are any samples of the original songs used; I made these babies from the ground up!
